Unfortunately I had to give my 5 year old Staffie dog up recently due to circumstances changing and all I can say is once I arrived at Birch Hill Rescue I was amazed. It was lovely, the views and the other dogs. Obviously my dog was a bit freaked out but they took him through and he seemed excited. They were very caring towards us and assured us he'll be okay. I got worried the next night and called them to ask how his first night was ans she assured me that he was okay and that he was getting all the attention he needed ect. I am so pleased and happy I've given my dog up to a wonderful place. The are really careful and precise on their policies so I know he's in the right hands. Relinquishment: November 2013

I adopted Taz in February this year. He had been at the shelter for over 18 months & was well cared for, as were all other dogs. The people at the shelter knew each dog in their care, & willing to look after them for life if necessary. I received a call the day after I collected Taz, & have kept in touch since. Perfect place to adopt a dog from. This shelter takes in a large number of death row dogs that other organisations have overlooked or given up on. Absolutely invaluable! Adoption: 2012

I visited to volunteer to walk some of the dogs and take some food etc. This is a very small rescue charity which is struggling for funds on a daily basis and it is obvious that the welfare of the dogs is their number one priority. These wonderful people take on all sorts of dogs that many of the bigger charities reject for no good reason. This is often the dogs' last chance. I cannot speak highly enough about the care and generosity of these people. God knows what would happen to these dogs if they were not here to help. Visit: 2011

I had my dog from Birch Hill Dog Rescue and you could tell from first time you meet them that they care for all the dogs and you could always ring if there were any problems. We had a male Staff named Oscar aged two years. He came to us very well trained. As soon as I took him for walk he would always stop at the road side and sit till you asked him to cross the road. There not many dogs that do that right away for new owners. Before we had Oscar, the rescue asked us number of questions about our family life and showed us some dogs which would be suitable one by one. This was so the other dogs would not get stressed out. They would not let us have a dog until we had a home check first because they wanted to know if our home would be suitable. Once this was done, we arranged to collect our dog and we couldnt have asked for better dog. He is so loving towards us and other people. The only problem which I would say - is that a sign would be better as the one now only said Birch Hill Kennels and it was hard to see. I would say if you are looking for a dog - visit Birch Hill Rescue first. Adoption: 2011

I adopted Vaider in December 2009, a puppy born to a rescued bitch at the kennels. When I phoned to enquire about a dog I explained what I wanted and my situation ( we have 4 rescued cats so needed a younger dog /puppy who could adapt to life with cats) I was warmly invited to view the puppies. On arrival I was met with a smile and when I said who I was, the rescue knew straight away who I had came to see. It was nice they cared enough to remember despite being very busy. As we were led to the puppies we passed so many wagging tails and I’m sure the carer spoke to everyone as she passed them calling each by name. We chose our puppy but had to wait a week as she was not old enough to be adopted. The kennels were recommended to me from a friend who runs another rescue centre (where I had previously had a dog from, and my sister used to foster for) so a home visit was not necessary but I did make it clear one could be done at anytime. When we fetched our puppy, the rescue gave her a cuddle and told her to behave and as she handed her to me I was offered a blanket to wrap her in but had taken my own. I was given phone number/email address and told to get in touch if I needed anything.
I have contacted the rescue a couple of times by email just to let them know how Vaider is doing and sent photos. I have always had a reply.
All I can say is this place is full of care, love and attention and the staff obviously care for each dog for who they are. Nothing is too much trouble and you know there is always advice /help on the end of a phone if needed.
1st class.

Myself and my husband went to the shelter to view a staffie dog called Blade he is the most wonderful dog we have ever had you love them all but he is a bit special. When we first had him we had some teething problems but with the help of birch hill we cracked it. I admire how hard they all work to protect these innocent dogs from harm. If god forbid anything happened tomy dogs I would always use birch hill to adopt another dog as they take a lot of care getting to know the dogs and getting it right for the customer. Adoption: 2009

The rescue listened to the kind of lifestyle we have and they identified which dogs would be most suitable. We have had our dog from them for 6 years now and we could not have had a better dog. Adoption: 2005

I have adopted 3 dogs from Birch Hills, the 2nd my beloved Milo died 2 years ago he was epileptic and lived with me for 8 years. The support I received from them was incredible. The first time Milo had a seizure was early hours of the morning I phoned them at 3 am they were brilliant. They gave me the support I needed up until the day he died. My first dog Connie who is know an old lady of 13 years was ill in the Summer I took her to the vets but she wasn't getting better. I phoned them and they told me exactly what to ask the vet. They are unique they care about the dogs in there rescue, if they are taken in and there are signs of ill treatment there main concern is to get the dogs safely away from people who do the ill treating and to safety. Connie was a dog that had been treated badly it took them 2 weeks to get her from up the corner she was so frightened. I know that if I need any help and support 12 years on I only have to phone they are always there to help. Adoption: 2002
