I like the individual descriptions of the cats on the website - this helped me narrow down my choice, as did advice I received on the telephone. The centre is small but cosy, very welcoming, and in a beautiful part of the country. We are very glad to welcome a new furry companion to our home!

Blue Cross at Tiverton is an excellent centre and matched me with a wonderful dog. All the staff I dealt with, on the phone and at the centre, were polite, professional and clearly animal lovers doing their very best for the animals in their care. I was provided with detailed information about the dog’s background and lots of helpful guidance on how to settle, train and care for a rescue dog. I love my Blue Cross rescue dog!

An excellent experience all round, the staff were both knowledgeable and friendly offering a good level of information on our dog.
I was impressed by the spaces they have to meet your dog, both the paddock and the home room offered appropriate settings for us and our dog to both play and relax.
We were given as much time as we needed to discuss her needs and I felt at ease asking questions.
I would highly recommend anyone considering adopting a dog (or cat!) to try the Blue Cross.Review by: Lucy Hann

I would recommend that anyone who is thinking of getting a dog that they get it from the Blue Cross in Tiverton. Such lovely friendly staff who absolutely love the dogs in their care. Plenty of advice was offered without me having to ask and the aftercare second to none, and I now have the most gentle, beautiful lurcher I could ever wish for.

We rehomed two beautiful kittens from here and were so impressed with the shelter. Fantastic experience and we are loving our gorgeous pair. We felt very supported in the experience and confident that any troubles will be dealt with. Kittens were vaccinated, microchipped and neutered and a full history was given. We were also given lots of advice.

We have adopted through Blue Cross before and find that they are helpful and provide useful information and help if needed. They are professional and have a thorough interview with you before you meet the pet. This makes us want to go back to Blue Cross if we are in the position to rehome a rescue pet because we know that we can trust the information that they provide and that they provide excellent care for the animals and if you need them they are always there to give advice even after you have adopted a pet from them. We were greeted warmly at reception by the BC staff and our first interview was with a charming, open minded, friendly lady who, very obviously adores the animals in her care. We were listened to patiently and given concise and honest advice.
We met Maggie the JRT bitch that same day in a quiet room. We were fully informed about her history and temperament. Things went well so Maggie was provisionally reserved and removed from the BC website, pending a 24 hour (for better of another word) 'cooling off' period. We called next day to ask to move forward. I spoke to the same lady.
We arranged a meet a few days later. We were again greeted warmly. Our Collie Sammy was introduced to Maggie in a controlled manner with original interviewer and another lady who watched carefully the interaction between Sammy and Maggie whilst we walked them down the lane together.
Lots of advice and observational feedback was given. Then we all went to the paddock and both dogs were allowed to interact in a calm post-walk environment. A few issues were apparent and discussed and addressed.
I feel the BC staff applied a genuine, non-clinical approach to re-homing, using intuition and common sense alongside reasonable BC set down procedures.
Following discussion and friendly guidance, Maggie came home yesterday.
The staff were genuinely sad to see her go. The bond between Maggie and them was obvious and touching.
Maggie has left a place that loved her and did the best they could to care for her daily needs.
Maggie will be fine. We'll be fine. This journey between us may have a few rocky moments but patience will prevail I'm sure.
Thank you V and J, We'll be in touch soon with an update.
Sincerely,
Deborah & Maggie.
PS. We will be in North Cornwall for 3 nights next week bonding, so may be too busy to eMail you for a while. ;-) Adoption: July 2013 -

Very relaxed atmosphere, we were able to spend as much time as we liked with the dog we adopted before taking her home. They were able to give us all the information we needed about the dog's background and behaviour whilst at the centre and offered advice on routines etc for when we took her home. Most importantly it was apparent that the dogs we saw at the centre had a great relationship with all of the staff and volunteers so were obviously well loved and cared for! Lovely, friendly staff and volunteers. Adoption: July 2013

Our whole adoption process was stress free and conducted with professionalism and upmost care. All staff involved were friends, professional and generally bent over backwards to help us rehome our beloved "furever " baby.

We lost our previous cat last November through old age, and we wanted to adopt a couple of kittens/young cats after Christmas. We'd heard good reports about the Blue Cross from friends who'd adopted through them, and early January we drove out to see whether they had any 'possibles'. BC had had three 9 month old cats in that day but we were unable to see them as they had not been assessed, the descriptions of two fitted exactly with what we were looking for (we weren't sure about adopting three though). A few days later we had the chance to meet the three and fell in love with all of them. The Centre were quite happy to offer 1, 2 or 3 in any combination, but said they were still a tight family group. During the obligatory 'cooling off' period we discussed whether three would be the right decision for us we realised that we couldn't split them up, so the following day 'phoned and asked to reserve all three. After a really long three days we were allowed back to the centre to collect our new family. All our contact with Blue Cross, and their staff was really positive, they talked us through and explained every step of the procedures, and it's obvious why our friends did, and we would, recommend them. Can't speak highly enough about this centre and the staff. What an joy the whole process was. Completely stress free and all focused on the welfare of the dog we adopted. We'll definitely go back in a few years if we decide to adopt a friend for our little boy.

When I saw the picture of an elderly greyhound who had been handed in to the centre as a stray I fell in love instantly. Having worked previously (at a different organisation) with a member of staff at Tiverton I was lucky enough not to have to make several visits to the centre to meet the dog prior to adopting him - convenient for me as I live several hundred miles away.
On the day I did visit the centre to meet and take home the greyhound I was greeted warmly despite arriving after closing time. My visit was not hurried and I was treated with the utmost respect and efficiency from beginning to end.
The staff were very forthcoming about everything to do with the dog and the efforts they had made to trace his owners. They were very knowledgeable and exceptionally friendly and it was quite clear that they cared deeply not only for this individual dog but also for all of the animals at the centre.
The atmosphere was relaxed and calm, the reception area was clean and tidy and the overall impression I got was very positive.
I can't recommend this centre and its staff highly enough. Adoption: 2012 -

Write from the word go when we first started to look for another dog we foud all staff freindly and knowleable and suitabilty of our requirements. We found the process quick and effichant in all areas. The staff at tiverton were not pushey towards the dogs or us to get to know each other and let the dogs play in the paddockm and the ran around like headless chicken which was amusing. We found the perfect dog a staffie called Toby and he is such good boy and gets on with our doberman called skye. i would recommmend this centre to anyone interested in getting any pet from them. We were given plenty of information on the process, lots of literature for additional information and plenty of info about his temperament and background. From first point of contact to adoption the Blue Cross at Tiverton were great. They were understanding and supportive that we had to travel approx 4 hours to reach them and meet Millie (was Cassie). The staff were friendly, polite & informative. We were initially interviewed for our suitability & viewed the cats looking for a good home. Our name was put on the waiting list for a kitten on the Sunday & by the following Thursday we were told a kitten was waiting for us to see. The cooling off period is a good idea & encourages folk to really think about what they are taking on. I personally found it a little hard to find as the sign posts for it are actually at the centre itself & not on the roads leading to it. The Blue cross were very sympathetic at the the loss of an old cat and tried hard to match us with a simular cat. They were very helpful in giving advice on how to settle cats into a new home. On arrival we sat in a meeting room with one of the staff to discuss the type of cat and go through forms to ensure we and where we lived were suitable for adopting a cat. We meet the cats we were interested in, in a well designed 'meeting room' that helped us get to know the cat better. I had not seen this procedure at any other adoption centre. The cat was able to meet all the family members and we could spend time watching and interacting with the cat before making up our minds which cat would be most suitable. The staff were extremely helpful and polite. They matched us with an appropriate pet and gave good support and advice. Adoption: 2012

A huge THANK YOU to Tiverton Blue Cross your service was simply outstanding. I found my girls on the website and rang to say I didn't want them split and would take both dogs but I couldn't get to meet them until a week later as I live in Hastings, E. Sussex so they "reserved" the girls for me. Arranged to stay for the weekend and spent all Saturday at the Centre meeting the girls and going through all the behaviour and info. We provided photos of our home and garden and other dogs we have had in the past so a home visit wasn't necessary as it wasn't possible due to distance. We collected the girls on Sunday and brought them home. The staff clearly cared deeply for the girls and couldn't have been more helpful or informative yet at the same time direct and honest about possible rehoming problems that might arise. Information supplied fantastic. Thank you for all the work you do for all the animals in your care - very clearly dedicated staff, a joy to have dealt with you. My girls have been with me for a week now and already feel as if they've always been a part of my family. Blue Cross are simply THE BEST :) Adoption: 2012

Having lost out 18 year old cat previously, we were treated with much support and understanding. It is the best feeling ever to be able to rescue two little kittens and give them the life they deserve. The staff were very informative and gave much sensible advice - such as keeping cats bowls ceramic so that cats drink more water, and keeping water and food bowls separate! The centre had a lovely warm feel, and it was a great experience. I enjoyed learning about the animals, meeting our kittens mum, and finding out about their short life before we met them! Nothing could be done better - all care and attention was given to us and advice on what to do next and where to go if we needed advice!! Adoption: 2012

I used the Blue Cross website to see what dogs they had up for adoption. I saw this particular dog, and used the online form to fill in all my details. We got a call saying someone else was interested, but we'd be next on the list if things didn't work out. Low and behold, we got a call, went to the center that afternoon, and the following week, we had our new dog.
The whole process was wonderful. You can sense the love and passion from everyone there. I would highly recommend getting a dog from a rescue center anyway, but if you're interested in the Blue Cross, don't hesitate, get in touch with them. Their knowledge is extensive, and they are there for you, if you have any questions. Adoption: 2012 -

We were dealt with soo well, offered loads of help and advice and it was very obvious how much they love all the animals in their care.
We adopted a beautiful cat who had been sleeping in their staff room so they knew him extremely well and informed us about all his likes and dislikes. We were also given a copy of his full medical history and a bag of his food to start us off as well as some advice leaflets on settleing him in. We were told that there is a behavior specialist available to us for life for any problems that may occur. -

As family we visited the Centre to register an interest in adopting a dog and were able to discuss the process and the kind of dog we were looking for. Within 2 weeks, we received a phone call to say that a potential adoptee had been identifed for us and a few days later we went to meet her. We had the opportunity to take her our for a walk ourselves which gave us the chance to see how we interacted with each other. We provided photos of our home so didn't need a home visit, and 1 week after seeing her we formally adopted her and bought her home.
All the staff were very professional, helpful and friendly and would recommend them to anyone thinking of adopting an animal. By listening to what we wanted they were able to match us with our lovely Roxy in order to give her a home where she is very much wanted and loved. Adoption: 2010 -

Having moved to the Devon countryside from a busy town in Kent at the beginning of November 2011, we were finally in a position to offer a loving & safe home to a pet. I was told about the Blue Cross at Tiverton by a neighbour, so we went to the Centre and were greeted by friendly helpful staff. They had lots of cats that needed re-homing at the time so we thought we'd take a look. And that's when we first met 'Bea' - 4th cage in on the left hand side - it was love at first sight! A member of staff spent a lot of time talking to us about Bea and filling us in on what they knew of her background, history & needs. We got to spend some time with Bea in their 'lounge' area & went home to have a 'cooling off' period, so as not to make any hasty decisions that we (or Bea) may regret. By the end of the week we were 100% convinced that she was indeed the cat for us and we made arrangements to pick her up & bring her home. Throughout the process I felt that the staff were totally committed to wanting only the very best for the animals in their care. I would like to say a HUGE "Thank you" to the Blue Cross at Tiverton, as without them we would never have found our lovely Bea. Adoption: 2011

Lisa the sharpei, Murphy the rotti X, and Woody the lab were all adopted from Blue X Tiverton. The staff are very helpfull and made sure that the dog was not only right for us but most important it was the right home for the dog, dont be put off by the adoption process it's done to make sure you have your perfect match and please dont dismiss an older dog "cant teach an old dog new tricks" rubbish our Lisa was a delight to own and her story was a sad one but she gave us 100% everyday and we still miss her :( .
The centre is clean and all the animals well cared for. Adoption: 2011

Having registered with the RSPCA, asked after several dogs, after 7 months had waited long enough. We knew we could offer a fantastic home, yet were not considered. What a difference we found with Blue Cross Tiverton. Staff were far more friendly and helpful, the centre looked a lot nicer, animal and human friendly and it was very obvious the Staff REALLY cared about the animals, AND the families adopting. I would recommend ANYONE wanting to adopt an animal, to try Blue Cross Tiverton. 10 out of 10, 5* I could not praise them highly enough. The little dog we adopted was perfect for us. Adoption: 2011

Six months after losing our beautiful, faithful companion, we decided the time right to search for another furry friend. We had already decided a rescue centre was the only way to go for us and searched the internet and visited many shelters. Without any hesitation, we would say the Blue Cross at Tiverton rose head and shoulders above any other shelter we have visited. Fantastic, amazing staff led us through every single stage with patience and courtesy for both us and the animals. Our new doggy pal is an absolute delight. Thanks to all at the Blue Cross. The staff were all very professional and friendly and we were able to meet the dog we were interested in , in a good controlled environment. The attention to detail was very good and the adoption "pack" was full of information, especially the vet. report with all the details of what our dog had been treated for and of innoculations, microchipping etc. Telephone advice after adoption has been very helpful. All the staff were very friendly and welcoming and, despite the fact that the centre was very busy, you were not made to feel as if your animal was just a number in a long line. The adoption was a direct one (where the dog had remained with its previous owners) and the only tricky thing was that, the day we went to meet her for the first time, her then owners were allowed to stay close by so that she was confused and kept wanting to return to them. We were made to feel very welcome. The centre were very accommodating towards us and our young children. We filled out the adoption form and were taken into a quiet meeting room where a member of staff went through & clarified what we were looking for. We were then able to pinpoint a couple of suitable kittens. We felt this was an excellent way of choosing an animal as it reduced the stress on the rest of the animals. We were then taken to meet our chosen animal. Once we had agreed to the adoption we were given a 24hr cooling off period which is a very good idea.
When we came to collect our animal we were again taken to a private room where we were efficiently taken through the forms and everything explained to us. We were given some of his food and his blanket to take home which has definitely helped him settle in.
We did have trouble getting through on the phone where they were so busy but we were able to leave a message & where necessary they called us back. Adoption: 2011 -

I knew the kind of dog I was looking for and had been looking at local rescue centres online when I saw "the one" on the Tiverton Blue Cross web page, I sat on it for a few days but kept thinking about her, so phoned and was told the procedure.
I didn't want to look at any other dogs, just this one... by providing photos of her new home, we were allowed to take her home the day we met her, this meant we didn't need to wait for a home visit, which for us was perfect, and meant that the dog was not in the centre any longer than was necessary.
I knew instantly she was right for our family, and after just over a week she is now settled like she has been with us forever!
The staff we met were very friendly and helpful and obviously cared what happened to the dog, we were sure we detected a few watery eyes when we were leaving!
I have had a very helpful reply to some emailed questions since taking our dog on. All in all the experience has been very positive and I would consider using them again if/when I come to look for another pet. Adoption: 2011 -

We visited last month as my boyfriend was looking for a dog in particular a husky, the staff that dealt with us were brilliant anything we needed to know they had the answer. We were given lots of leaflets advice and tips which has helped, i cant thank them enough and we are sooo happy with the dog we choose.
I would recomend adopting a dog from a shelter like the blue cross as you as much help and support that you need.
Once again many thanks. Adoption: 2011 -

After the loss of our very elderly special dog,we were, as a family looking for a dog to fill the "hole" left behind.
The tiverton blue cross were patient, understanding and extremely helpful in helping us to find the right addition to our family.Nothing was too much trouble and we were fussy!
I am extremely grateful to the acting center manager, who did find our perfect boy!
Our family is once again complete. Thank you, a truly profesional service! -

The staff were able to provide us with extensive information about the dogs we were interested in, why they were in the centre, health status etc. We were warned they had an issue with other dogs, so no nasty surprises. They encouraged us to play and walk the dogs which was great. No spur of the moment decisions were allowed to adopt which we felt was in the best interest of the dogs. Adoption: 2011

We adopted our cat 2 years ago now. I initially went to help a friend choose a cat and fell in love with her cat's brother! The staff were very helpful, arranged for my nervous son to meet the cat with no pressure. Seriously considering adopting another from them soon. Adoption: Jan 2011

We have now used this branch 3 times over the years, and we'll continue to do so in the future.
The staff were very happy to help, anytime, always giving 101% of their attention and advice, in fact they have bent over backwards to help us in every respect, when we tried to adopt one dog she was reseved by someone else, l was then given a ring 2 weeks later to let us know there was another suitable dog available, and she was held for us to go and see her, we adopted her and she's now living very happily with the previous dog we adopted from this centre they adore each other.
Thank you so very much for a most pleasant experience and be assured we will be back again when necessary. Adoption: 2010 -

Our entire experience was a joy. We adopted our dear Shish, a collie cross, who had come from London for a country experience after her owner had died and she made the most of every moment. The centre were excellent both to Shish and us and although we lost her suddenly in June of this year, it was an experience we shall always treasure and, when a suitable period of mourning has passed, will repeat using the centre again. She was so lovely. May she rest in absolute peace. She will never be forgotten. Adoption:2009

Was very impressed with the whole process from enquiry to adoption of our dog. Would highly recommend the centre, particularly as the staff were very thorough and knowledgable.
I have contacted the centre to give them an update of the first 6 months we've had with our dog but had no reply. Would have been nice for them to make contact to check the dog had settled in ok or if there were any issues they may be able to offer advice for.
When we picked up our dog we bought a collar from the centre but there wss a limited amount of toys/leads/collars etc on offer. We would have preffered to pay the charity rather than a pet shop. Perhaps for the future it would be nice to offer more merchandise to generate more income for the charity?
When the time comes, we will definitely consider adopting from the Blue Cross, and in particular the Tiverton Centre again.

We rescued our Spaniel/Collie cross from Tiverton Blue Cross almost 4 years ago. However we remember the great kindness shown to us since we had lost our 15-year old Sprollie only a month previously and were grieving. The staff were very empathetic and very knowledgable about dogs & puppies. We went through what was quite a rigorous interview and I firmly believe that this is necessary in order to place an animal with the right people in the right conditions. We were given lots of information and offered aftercare. We had ocassion to telephone for advice shortly after Minnie settled in with us and we were given information. The advisor also phoned a couple of times after that to see that all was going well with Minnie. The centre was spotless, the staff friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. Minnie's background was explained in full and we left full of gratitude for the way we were dealt with. They even gave us a couple of toys to bring home with her. We'll never forget this experience and cannot praise the centre highly enough. I would recommend anyone looking to give a pet a loving home to try the Blue Cross Centre at Tiverton.
